With temperatures heating up in Southern California, and the fact that El Niño was a bust, Californians must continue to conserve water to help battle the monumental drought! Check out our list of water conservation tips below to get a jump on conserving water.
In Your Home
Check your faucets and pipes for leaks
A small drip from a warn faucet washer can waste 20 gallons of water per day. Larger leaks can waste hundreds of gallons.
Check your toilets for leaks
Put a little food coloring in the toilet tank. If, without flushing, the color appears in the bowl within 30 minutes, you have a leak.
Insulate your water pipes
It’s easy and inexpensive to install pre-slit foam pipe insulation. You’ll get hot water faster, and avoid water waste.
Use a water-saving show head
Inexpensive water-saving, low-flow shower heads or restrictors are easy for the homeowner to install themselves and help save a significant amount of water in the long run.
Take shorter showers
A four-minute shower uses 20 to 40 gallons of water. Try turning off the shower after soaping up, then turn it back on to rinse.
Turn off the water while brushing
Don’t leave the water running while brushing, just wet your brush and fill a glass for mouth rinsing.
Only wash full loads
Avoid pre-rinsing dishes to aid in water conservation. With clothes washers, avoid the permanent press cycle, which uses an added 5 gallons.
