Run a 10k or 5k half marathon through Laguna Hills, Aliso Viejo and Laguna Niguel at the 17th Annual City of Laguna Hills Memorial Day Half Marathon. Honoring the United States marine Corps Dark Horse Battalion, runners and walkers of all experience levels are invited to come out and enjoy the Memorial Day activities. There is even a kids run which starts and finishes at the Laguna Hills Community Center. The adults half marathon, 5K and 10K both start in front of the Saddleback Memorial Medical Center and finish at the Laguna Hills Community Center. Medals given out at this year’s race honor the United States Marine Corps. Do something healthy with your family and run (or walk) the distance of your choice. Find out more about the event here.

More than 3,500 Orange County residents are expected to “Celebrate Freedom” with Fairhaven Memorial Park at its 23rd Annual Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 25 at 10:30 a.m. Attendees will enjoy inspiring speeches by military veterans, a “Parade of Flags” by The Tustin Young Marines, the Boy Scouts of America and the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, and music by the Orange County Concert Band and the Tustin Community Choir. The event will begin with a special performance of the National Anthem by the “Star Spangled Singer” contest winner and conclude with an aerial fly-over of World War II-era planes by Memorial Flights. This celebration of patriotism will also feature an antique cars display, “America’s Wars” life-sized photo essay and more. Complimentary hot dogs and refreshments will be served. Admission is FREE.

Memorial Day is seen by a lot of people as the unofficial beginning of summer, so there’s no better way to get into summer mode than with a carnival. Starting on Friday, the carnival goes all weekend and will give guests the chance to find everything you love about carnivals including rides, games, food and live music by local bands. It’s a great way for the whole family to have fun without spending a lot of money like you would at an amusement park.

One of the great things about summer is that strawberries are plentiful. For more than 50 years, the city of Garden Grove has held a festival celebrating the delicious fruit. The festival is celebrated throughout the entire Memorial Day weekend and includes a parade, a 5K run and a variety of contests. Expect grand floats, bands, equestrians and characters such as Knott’s Berry Farm’s Snoopy as well! Thousands turn out every year for this grand event where you’ll also get the chance to see many film and TV celebrities who are honored in the parade. Admission to the festival is free, but there is a cost for rides.
