A dark room can feel drab and uninviting. Bringing light to a dark room will instantly make it more appealing, inviting, and spacious. If you have a dark, dreary room you’d love to fill with natural light, follow our 5 simple tips below!
1. Focus on light paint colors
Light colors are the hands-down the easiest decorating trick for creating a bright and airy setting. Light paint colors reflect natural light, while darker paint colors which absorb it. White, of course, is the easiest choice and reflects natural light extremely well. If you don’t feel like going with white, try lighter natural colors like a soft beige, or even a sky blue.
2. Mirror mirror on the wall…
A strategically placed mirror in a darker room can make a world of difference. It will reflect the natural light and make the entire room feel brighter and bigger. Large mirrors with thinner frames work best because they reflect the most light while feeling less chunky and cumbersome.
3. Go for a glass door
If you are willing to make a more permanent and slightly more costly change to your home, we suggest swapping a solid door out for a glass one. If it’s an exterior door, the room will be flooded with natural light. If it’s an interior door, it will make the room feel more open and bright.
4. Lighten your window treatments
In order to make the most of your natural light, avoid heavy draperies and window treatments that block the light. Choose minimal options like blinds and roman shades that don’t take up space on your wall. And if you’re concerned about privacy, go for an opaque treatment that will allow natural light flow while still giving you privacy.
5. Lighten up those floors
Dark floors can make a room feel even darker and smaller. If you can’t refinish or replace your dark floor, try covering some spaces with a light-toned area rug. It will instantly bring brightness to the area by reflecting any natural light.
