Orange County schools are back in session this week as the 2017-2018 school year begins. And while back-to-school time is always a little hectic, there are a few things you can do in order not be overwhelmed by the challenges of a new school season. Get your home back-to-school ready with these simple tips.
Get Organized
If you start out with a clean slate, it will be much easier to keep it that way. It’s inevitable that papers will pile up, along with coats, backpacks, shoes etc., – but have a designated place for everything from the start, that way you’ve tilted the organizational scales in your favor. For example, if you have a mudroom, clear it to create storage space for backpacks, shoes, sports equipment, and other school items. Be sure to have hooks for jackets and shelves for storage containers.
Install Shelves/Bookcases
Books, binders, and folders have a tendency of piling up and creating clutter. So it’s a good idea to have several accessible storage areas to put books away. You can use book caddies, shelves, or bookcases as solutions to keep clutter to a minimum while also keeping your child organized.
Get a Family Calendar
Hang a dry-erase calendar in a high traffic area of your home to keep track of everyone’s activities and to keep them informed. Have a different colored marker for each member of the family so you know who’s up to what at a glance.
Create a Homework Zone
It is so important for children to have their own designated study areas – and we’re not talking about at the kitchen table! If there’s a place in their bedroom for a desk, that’s perfect. Otherwise choose a low traffic room, ideally without a television, to set up a homework zone. Keep the space organized with shelving, storage bins, and all the homework essentials like pens, pencils, and paper.
Get Your Pantry Ready
Be sure to stock up on healthy, on-the-go food items in drawers and fridge shelves. Designate a section of your pantry for packed lunch items and after school snacks. Having clear options helps discourage your children from eating junk food or clearing out your pantry in one sweep.
