So you’ve closed on your home and finally have the keys in hand! While the hard stuff is behind you, there’s still a bit of work to do to make your new home officially your own! To narrow it down, we’ve created a simple list of 7 things to do when you move into your new home. So what are you waiting for, get started today!
#1 Clean It
Cleaning your home when you first move in will not only help you make your first mark on the home, but will also ensure it is up to your cleaning standards. Plus, who doesn’t like a clean home? Enlist friends and family to help clean, and celebrate with some pizza and drinks afterwards.
#2 Check Fixtures and Fittings
Go through the home and make sure everything that was included in the sale price is still there. Have you agreed on carpets, curtains, chandeliers, etc. to be included?
#3 Take Meter Readings
Check the meter readings, write them down, and call them in to your utility company. Don’t forget the readings from your old residence as well.
#4 Test the Security System
If the home comes with a preexisting security system, make sure you have learned the system, have new codes, and are familiar with how it operates. When you move into a new neighborhood, having a reliable security system can make you feel very safe.
#5 Test the Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms
This is vital for the safety of you and your family. Make sure all your alarms work by testing the batteries. Replace old batteries and if they still don’t work after changing batteries, completely replace the alarms as soon as you can.
#6 Change the Locks
You want to be sure you’re the only person with access to your new home!
#7 Introduce Yourself to Your Neighbors
Don’t forget to say hello to your neighbors. It’s a great way to settle in and get to know the neighborhood.
