It’s that time of year again! In less than two weeks you’ll be greeted by little ghosts and goblins shouting “Trick or Treat!” Now is the time to prepare your home for a safe Halloween before you have sugar crazed children running around your neighborhood. We’ve gathered a few tips on how to keep your home safe for Halloween to get you started.
Halloween safety for kids starts at home. Remind your children that they need to walk, not run to houses, and that they need to stick to well lit driveways and sidewalks.
2. Clear a Path
Trick-or-treaters are going to be way too busy going through their candy bags to pay attention to where they’re walking, so it’s critical to make sure the path from your driveway or the sidewalk to the front door is free from obstructions or hazards. Repair uneven walkway stones, put away hoses, rakes, etc., and if you add any spooky yard decorations be sure that they don’t obstruct any pathways.
3. Avoid Using Candles
While using candles to light up your Jack-O’-Lantern make seem second nature to you, they also pose a fire hazard. Instead of real candles, opt for LED tea lights or flameless candles. Or wind a string of orange lights around your porch to light up the night!
4. Confine Pets
If you don’t want Fido or Fluffy to get too overwhelmed by the constant ringing of doorbells and opening of doors, make sure you confine them somewhere safe. Keep them away from all the excitement and don’t let them out until the trick-or-treating is over.
5. Check your Homeowner’s Coverage
Even though you are just opening up your home to trick-or-treaters, you’re also opening up the possibility of potential insurance claims and lawsuits. Check with your insurance agent to make sure your home is property covered.
