With the new year comes the opportunity to start fresh and set new goals and new year’s resolutions. If you’re a homeowner, or intend on becoming one this year, here are 5 new year’s resolutions you can make for 2016!
1. Cut Energy Use
Start the year out right by reducing your energy use. A good place to start is with a home energy audit. Professionals assess how much energy your home consumes and evaluate what measures you can take to make your home more energy efficient. Suggestions could be both small (LED light bulbs) and large (solar panels or replacing HVAC duct work) so that you can stretch your energy dollar. Even tiny lifestyle changes, such as unplugging devices or programming your thermostat can make a difference.
2. Make Extra Mortgage Payments
If you are financially able, go ahead and start making extra mortgage payments. Making extra payments can dramatically shorten the time it takes until your mortgage is paid in full. You’ll also end up saving big when it comes to costly interest charges.
3. Get New Homeowners’ Insurance Quotes
Looking to save a few dollars this year? How about getting a new homeowners’ insurance quote. You might be eligible for some discounts that weren’t available when you first applied. So call your agent and see if you can bump down your yearly installment. If they won’t budge, start shopping around for a better rate.
4. Cut Back on Water Usage
Although this new year is said to bring much needed rain to California thanks to El Nino, it won’t be enough to get California out of its four-year-long drought. Look for simple ways to save water around your house like installing a low-flow showerhead or low-flow toilet. Cut back shower times and use outdoor watering systems sparingly. If you’re up for an even bigger way to save on water this year, check out xeriscaping; a type of landscaping that reduces or eliminates the need for of water.
5. Get Organized
This year the clutter has got to go! Start by going through your home and create three different piles; keep, throw away, and donate. Once you’ve gone through everything, focus on storage solutions. Get creative! Check out The Container Store for some awesome ideas and products!
