It’s hard to believe it’s fall here in Southern California, especially with temperatures still hanging around the upper 80’s. But before the cooler weather sets in and you break out your boots and cozy sweaters, it’s important to tackle a few home maintenance projects. Here’s our list of 5 simple fall maintenance tasks that you can cover in one weekend.
1. Clean Your Gutters
Leaves and debris build up all year in your gutters. When they clog your gutters, rainwater can’t flow through and will eventually spill over. This overflow can damage your home’s siding, roof, and/or foundation. So instead of waiting for a costly problem to arise, hire someone to clean out your gutters or do it yourself.
2. Check the Roof
If you’re up cleaning your gutters, you might as well do a visual inspection of your roof! Make sure all shingles are in place and there is no bowing or sagging anywhere. It’s important to make sure your roof is in tip top shape before any significant winter rain or storms.
3. Look for Cracks and Gaps Indoors
When you shut doors and windows, make sure no air is escaping through cracks or gaps. If it is, be sure to seal them with weatherstripping, caulk, insulation, or if necessary, brand new windows/doors. You’ll thank yourself later when you see your heating bill!
4. Clean Your Dryer Vent
Cooler weather means more static electricity, which means lint buildup in your dryer can ignite more easily. Clean your dryer vent to help prevent this problem and keep it working more efficiently.
5. Test Safety Devices
Test safety devices such as smoke alarms and CO2 monitors. Make sure they work and the batteries are fresh. If you have a fire extinguisher, be sure to check its expiration date as well. Better to be safe than sorry!
Following these 5 simple fall maintenance tasks will ensure a safer home for the entire family and give you peace of mind.
