Lets face it, not all sellers get their homes in tiptop shape before listing them — let alone clean their homes before selling. However, one seller’s laziness can be a huge gain for the right buyer.
After hundreds of homes sold, listed, and toured, here’s our list of 3 things you can ignore when looking for a home. While they may be off-putting, they shouldn’t stop you from considering making an offer, especially if you love the home’s layout or location.
Strange wallpaper or dirty carpet
Yes, ascetically speaking, strange wallpaper and/or dirty carpet are huge turn offs; especially for today’s buyers who generally prefer a home that is turn-key or move-in ready.
However, painting walls and replacing carpets isn’t always as time-consuming or expensive as you may think. Plus, you can even do these projects before moving in.
If a seller won’t replace or professionally clean their carpet or paint the interior a neutral color, they’re shooting themselves in the foot. This is where you as the buyer can capitalize on this and put in a lower offer.
Oddly used rooms
It’s not uncommon to see a home’s dining room transformed into an office. Some homeowners even have a a walk-in closet doubling as a playroom.
Just because the homeowner uses these spaces in a way that suits them, doesn’t mean you have to. These rooms might stand out as odd to you, but try to forget that the seller lives there, and remember you’ll be able to arrange the home exactly how you’d like once they’ve moved out.
Lack of curb appeal
If you’re not saying “wow” when you first drive up, that’s okay. As the saying goes, “don’t just a book by its cover,” or in this case, a house. It may be that the reward awaits inside. You may have to envision a different colored front door or some new landscaping, and that may do the trick. While curb appeal is undoubtedly important, don’t be put off by the exterior of a home, especially if the interior and overall structure is perfect.Imagine your own touches to the exterior of the home. With minor and inexpensive changes like landscaping, a new mailbox, house numbers and front door, you can vamp up that curb appeal in no time.
