Working from home has grown enormously over the past few years thanks to technology making it possible to virtually work anytime, anywhere. While you may enjoy the perks of answering emails in your pajamas and avoiding a traffic-filled commute, if you’re in the process of trying to sell your home, it can be especially challenging when your home is also your office.
Working from a for-sale house means frequent interruptions from real estate agents, keeping everything clean 24/7, and the need to vacate at a moment’s notice. Make the process a breeze with our tips on selling your house when you work from home.
1. Set up specific open house and showing times
In order for your workday to have some structure, you must place restrictions on open house hours and showing times. While you might run the risk that you’ll miss out on potential buyers by being too regimented, your job (and sanity) need to come first. If you can’t be flexible during weekdays, try and be open on the weekends. It’s all about a manageable balance.
2. Temporarily move your “office” to a library or coffee shop
There may be times when the best thing to do is to show the house when a potential buyer wants to see it, even if it’s not the best time for you. Luckily for you, most coffee shops and libraries offer free wifi and a quiet place to work. So make sure you are prepared! Keep a backpack nearby to quickly put your laptop and charging cables into if you need to leave the house in a hurry.
3. Keep your workspace tidy
A neat and tidy house is key when trying to sell your home. While a messy desk might work for you, it won’t do you any good when trying to sell your home. Have a quick plan on where to stash your papers, notes, pens etc. in case you have a showing. Having a designated desk drawer or decorative basket where you can toss your office clutter into in a hurry will be extremely helpful.
