We were all keeping our distance as much as possible this time last year, so for many families a big Thanksgiving dinner was out of the question. While this year is still far from normal, hosting a Thanksgiving dinner is one tradition that many can not stand the thought of putting off again. This year, we hope you are able to spend the day with those that you love most.
Here are some tips for hosting a fabulous Thanksgiving dinner this year.
- Plan ahead.
Planning ahead can make the difference between being prepared and feeling overwhelmed. One thing that you can do to plan ahead is make a list. Write down a list of the foods you need, things you need to accomplish around the house, and a guest list so you know how many people to serve. Planning ahead also means pulling out dishes the night before, getting the table set, and prepping any food you can in advance. Don’t forget to have to-go bags or disposable containers ready for guests to take home leftovers.
- Create a day of timeline.
Being organized is never a bad idea, especially on a day that has so many different timelines to follow. From keeping track of recipe cook times to football kickoff times, Thanksgiving is a day that is full of schedules. Create a timeline for the day and set reminders so that nothing gets missed and the day goes by a lot smoother.
- Remember the importance of décor.
Décor sets the vibe for the gathering. Things such as place settings and table décor are the difference between a casual get together or an elegant affair. Consider making name tags where you want guests to sit. Not only do they add to the décor, but it also helps from keeping guests apart that might cause an issue at the dinner table. When planning your décor also keep family photos in mind. Set up a spot or backdrop that guests can gather in front of to snap a few photos for the family album.
- Have activities for the kids.
While hosting any gathering where kids will be in attendance, it is always a good idea to have some activities for them to do. Print out Thanksgiving pages for the kids to color. Have crafts out, such as construction paper, glue, feathers, and scissors to make turkey hand cutouts. You can also purchase Thanksgiving themed placemats to keep the kids entertained while everyone is enjoying their meals. You can purchase those here.
- Don’t forget to ask for help.
Preparing to host a large gathering can be stressful, so it is important to ask for help where help is needed so that you avoid being overwhelmed. Enroll a spouse or family member to help set the table, grocery shop, or clean the house. Having each guest bring a side dish as well and going potluck style is a great way to go when there are many people to feed.
We hope that you make this Thanksgiving the best one yet!
