By the time you get the keys to your new construction home, you’ve already spent quite a bit of money constructing your dream home. However, the spending doesn’t stop at closing. Be sure to set aside money for these additional costs that are unique to new construction homes.
Landscaping
While this varies community to community, some builders only landscape the front yard, leaving the backyard unfinished. This means you’ll have to fork up the cash to landscape your yard. Whether you do it by yourself or hire a professional, landscaping will still cost you a pretty penny. And, if your new neighborhood has a homeowner’s association, they may require you to finish your yard within a certain time period.
Appliances
Unless you’ve previously negotiated appliances into the price of your new construction home with your builder, your new laundry room and kitchen will be a big empty space. Most builders intentionally leave out appliances to let homeowners choose a style that fits their needs. Make sure you budget for a refrigerator, washer, and dryer if need be.
Window Coverings
The majority of new construction homes do not come with window coverings. Before you move in, make sure you’ve installed blinds for privacy’s sake. You’ll have to budget for curtains as well!
Furniture
Keep in mind that you may have furniture that worked well in your old space, but won’t fit your new home’s layout. Set aside some money now so you can start decorating as soon as you move in. With just a little planning and saving in advance, you can spend more time making your new house a home, and less time worrying about how to afford it all.
