The name “Laguna Niguel” is derived from the Spanish word “Laguna,” which means lagoon, and the word “Niguel,” which was the name of a Juaneno Indian village once located near Aliso Creek. Over one-third of Laguna Niguel is designated as an open space. This significant amount of open space is one of the key features defining the character and urban form of the City.
Laguna Niguel residents are served by the Capistrano Unified School District. Seven elementary schools and one middle school are located in the City. The high schools serving Laguna Niguel students are located in Dana Point and Aliso Viejo as well as Saddleback College, a community college, located within a few miles of Laguna Niguel.

Serving as the center for the City’s recreational programs and activities and attracts over 240,000 people each year. The park is home to Crown Valley Pool, the Laguna Niguel Labyrinth, Niguel Botanical Preserve, Laguna Niguel Family YMCA, a new Sprayground, Amphitheater, two new playgrounds, rental facilities, and a variety of sports fields. The park and recreation department of Laguna Niguel’s mission statement is to “provide a wide variety of innovative, diverse and inclusive recreational and cultural opportunities which enhance the quality of life for residents of Laguna Niguel.”

The Laguna Niguel Skateboard and Soccer Park provide year-round enjoyment for skateboard and soccer enthusiasts with state-of-the-art facilities. The Skateboard and Soccer Park features a 20,000 square foot concrete skateboard park and a synthetic grass soccer field and hosts a number of events year-round. The skate park features beginning, intermediate, and more advanced areas for skaters of all skill levels. The facility is supervised by City recreation staff.
